There are lots of different ways to hypnotize people.

If you've ever day dreamed, you already know how to hypnotize yourself. You probably just aren't sure how you did it.

If you want some specific techniques then use the resources linked at the end of this article or search the web for "hypnotic induction". But we'll cover some simple techniques here.

The first hypnotic technique we'll look at is called a pattern interrupt. We all run patterns or programs all day. You almost certainly don't consciously decide when to put one foot in front of the other when you're walking. That's a pattern you run.

This technique takes account of the brief state of confusion that our mind enters when a pattern it is running gets broken unexpectedly. Remember as a child when you went to shake someone's hand and then, just as your two hands were about to meet, you moved your hand up to blow a raspberry at the other person? That's a pattern interrupt. It works well and you can change blowing a raspberry to drawing your hand down in front of the other person's face and saying the command "sleep". Give it a try with a willing friend!

Some people prefer to use more orthodox hypnotic inductions. They're good to use as they don't rely as much on timing and you can adjust your induction to the speed the subject is dropping into a hypnotic trance.

In this traditional method, you'd get the person you are hypnotizing to relax. Asking them to take a deep breath in, hold it for a second or two and then gradually release it is a good way to start.

Then let them close their eyes as soon as they are ready. Now. (This extra word, "now", is actually a command to them, so chances are they will close their eyes as soon as you say it.)

You may wish to confuse your subject slightly. This often works as our mind is typically one track, especially if you are dealing with a male subject! Asking the mind to concentrate on several different things is difficult for it.

One simple confusion technique is to ask your hypnotic subject to count backwards in their head from, say, 300. You start with them, 300, 299, 298, 297. Then you confuse them a bit by saying that they may lose track (spot the command there?) and not to worry if they do but just to continue from where they last remember.

Whilst they're doing that, you continue with your chosen hypnotic induction routine. Maybe getting them to visualize being on a beach or in a garden or woodland. Then walking them down some steps whilst deepening their state of trance. There are lots of hypnotic induction scripts out there - choose one you're comfortable with.

Once your subject is hypnotized deeply enough, the real work of getting them to change can begin. Again, use a relevant and tested script for this section. You can find a lot more resources about this in the link below.
